If you have noticed an increase in the number of crawlies around your home or office, you are not alone.
Most Sydney homeowners are now making the most of the warm weather — and heat-loving insects are, too. Pest control experts share that Sydney cockroaches come out to play in summer. So with the increasing temperatures, expect to see cockroaches coming out of the woodwork more often.
According to Bryce Peters, an entomologist in the University of Technology, Sydney, the warm weather is giving the cockroaches and other insects more energy. In fact, they go through their life cycle faster. Also, they become more noticeable around the city.
The most prevalent in Sydney are German cockroaches. They like moist, warm indoor places to live in. They consume both human and pet food, fermenting or decaying matter, and other substances. As long as they have water, food, and shelter, an infestation can happen rapidly because with a good thriving environment, they can breed faster.
For instance, a female German cockroach lives no more than 20 weeks; however, during that time, she is capable of producing seven egg capsules with each holding up to 48 eggs. Therefore, a single female cockroach can give birth to about 35,000 cockroaches.
The Dangers of a Cockroach Infestation
Apart from looking disgusting, cockroaches can also be a threat to your health. These pests can contaminate the surfaces where you prepare food, your floors, and even the fruit bowls with their droppings. Also, they can transfer the microorganisms that can spread diseases, such as staphylococcus, streptococcus, and salmonella.
Moreover, cockroaches shed their external skeleton. If you breathe it in, this can affect your health since it can trigger asthma. Their droppings and skin when inhaled can cause asthmatic and allergic reactions. So as soon as you notice a cockroach infestation, have it properly treated by a professional pest control company.
Since cockroaches are nocturnal, you might not see them at daytime even when you have an infestation. However, there are some tell-tale signs that indicate their presence. These include droppings that look like black pepper or coffee grounds and skeletons that you may find in hidden locations like under couches and behind furniture. Some species of cockroaches can also be detected by the unpleasant smell they emit.
Eliminating cockroaches is not easy. They are resilient to the different methods of killing them. Thus, the cockroach bombs and traps you buy from the store won’t work effectively. The only way to eradicate or prevent a cockroach infestation efficiently and quickly is to call in pest control experts. These professionals can deliver a superior service because they are equipped with the right knowledge, skill, and tools.
