Signs Your Property Has Termites

Termites prefer a dark, humid and well protected environment, which makes them very difficult to find – until it’s too late and irreversible and extremely expensive damage is done. It is very important and highly recommended that annual termite inspections be carried out by a qualified Pest Controllers.

Termite Damage

Termites actually do leave signs of their presence though unfortunately it is often their damage that is seen.

Listed below are some common signs that termites have invaded your home or business;

  • thin papery or hollow sounding timber – when you knock, tap or even lightly touch an area that has been damaged by termites, it sounds hollow or  something like paper, due to the fact that some or all of the timber being eaten away, consumed from the inside out, leaving a thin veil of timber or paint.
  • you house becomes easily damaged – for example; the vacuum breaks the skirting board, your finger accidentally and with little force, presses through a door jam. As termites have eaten away the structural integrity of the timber, such as a skirting board, door jam or architrave, bumps or small amounts of pressure can easily cause damage.
  • tight fitting door or hard to open window – termite excrement creates a protective environment that traps heat and moisture causing timber to swell, making it much more difficult to close doors and open windows.
  • cracks in the cornice or door jams – don’t jump to conclusions, cracks could also be caused by movements in your home and possibly be completely unrelated to termites. But to be on the safe side it’s best to contact your local Pest Controller, as termites do eat away the timber in your walls or door jams which then causes a loss in structural integrity and cracks forming.
  • Termite mud – termites construct ‘mud’ tunnels, (excrement) to provide themselves with a safe environment to travel around and protect their food sources. This ‘mud’ is often not visible as it is generally created behind your gyp-rock or underground, although in some cases it can be seen in your home’s brick foundations or in architraves.
